The Joy of Creativity: A Path to Renewal, Leadership, and Purpose
There’s a particular kind of magic in creativity—a way it touches our hearts and reminds us of what it feels like to be truly alive. For me, floristry is that magic. The scent of eucalyptus and pine, the texture of dried oranges and cinnamon, the artistry of crafting something beautiful from nature—it all fills me with joy.
But this isn’t just about wreaths or flowers. It’s about something deeper: the opportunity to step out of the noise of daily life and into a space where we can reconnect with ourselves. Creativity is more than an outlet; it’s a way to nurture our mental fitness, relieve stress, and bring our whole selves forward.
As leaders—whether in the workplace, in our communities, or at home—this connection to creativity is essential. Leadership isn’t just about strategies or performance metrics. It’s about the heart. When we lead with heart and purpose, we inspire others to do the same. Creativity fuels this by helping us think differently, solve problems with clarity, and approach challenges with renewed energy.
I’ve learned that creativity has no boundaries, no right or wrong.
It’s not about creating something “perfect.” It’s about the process—allowing yourself to explore, experiment, and express. When I sit down to make a wreath, it’s not just a craft project; it’s a practice in mindfulness. I step out of the rush of life and into a space where I can breathe deeply, think clearly, and just be.
And isn’t that what we all need? A moment to pause, recharge, and remind ourselves of the joy and purpose in our lives?
Creativity and Mental Fitness
Creativity plays a vital role in maintaining mental fitness. It activates our brains in ways that promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. It reminds us that life isn’t all about productivity—it’s also about presence. Studies even show that engaging in creative activities can reduce cortisol levels, improve mood, and enhance problem-solving abilities.
When leaders prioritize their mental fitness, they show up with more energy, empathy, and resilience. And when they model this for their teams, it creates a ripple effect, fostering cultures where authenticity and innovation thrive.
Leadership from the Heart
I’ve spent years discovering what it means to bring my whole self to leadership—heart, creativity, purpose, and all. I’ve found that when we allow ourselves to lead with heart, we connect with others on a deeper level. We inspire trust, encourage collaboration, and cultivate an environment where people feel seen and valued.
Creativity is at the center of this. It teaches us to think beyond the conventional, embrace new possibilities, and find joy in the process. And when we lead with joy, it’s contagious.
As Brené Brown beautifully said: "Creativity is the way I share my soul with the world."
I invite you to reconnect with your own creativity.
Maybe it’s floristry, painting, baking, or journaling. Whatever it is, let it be your sanctuary. A place where you can step away from the demands of life and step into your purpose.
